After a nearly 2-year run in the Pantages theater, "Wicked" flew out of Los Angeles, "for good" Sunday after its final two sold-out performances. The beloved musical theater staple did exceptionally well in Los Angeles' typically fickle theater scene. "Wicked" pulled in a record $1,949,068 during its opening week at the Pantages in December of 2007 and its box offices have earned over $145 million in its entire run. The final week for the musical billed as "the untold story of the witches of Oz" was expected to top its own record set during opening week. Final figures were expected to be announced later this week.
Eden Espinosa and Megan Hilty, the actresses who respectively originated the lead roles of Elphaba and Glinda in the play's L.A. run, returned to "Wicked" for its grand finale. "Wicked" will make a new home at San Francisco's Orpheum Theatre starting January 27th. As for the Pantages, "The Phantom of the Opera" will be making its return after a more than 10 year absence, starting January 21st. Following a one month stay of "Phantom," the Pantages hosts a 2009 schedule that includes productions of "Rent," "Dirty Dancing," "Grease," "Fiddler on the Roof," "Legally Blonde: The Musical," and "Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas."
